Toot Toot for Tutus! Where to Get Your Very Own!

May 16, 2014 2 Comments

Untitled By Myra “MeeMee” Taylor Tutus. I dare you to go to a race and not see them. Red, polka dot, lit up with blinking lights… They are everywhere! SELF magazine obviously isn’t a fan. According to NBC News, the magazine embarrassed itself recently when it published a picture of a marathon runner proudly rocking a tutu, mocked it, and then learned the woman had brain cancer and was wearing the tutu to give herself motivation. (Talk about your “oops!” moments.) Of course SELF apologized, but their disdain for tutus was clear. Luckily, not everyone feels the same way about this trend. Love em’ or hate em’, tutus are a staple in the running world. Why? Not only can they motivate you, but they show your personality, are fun to wear, and look great in pictures! Wondering where you can get your own tutu? You’ve got lots of options! 1) Make It Yourself: It will cost you around $15 bucks for the materials and is super easy to do. YouTube.com has a ton of videos to show you the way. (Tip: Take advantage of the frequent Joann Fabrics & Craft Store 40% off coupons when buying your tulle!) 2) Ain’t No Party Like A Tutu Party: BGR-Los Angeles is planning to host a tutu making party. For a small fee, participants will be provided the necessary materials plus some snacks. What a fun way to make your tutu! Check to see if your local chapter is doing something similar or organize your own party. 3) Online: The runner from the SELF story has a company called Glam Runner that makes tutus and donates the money to charity. You can also find tutus at the usual sites like eBay.com or Amazon.com. 4) Expos: There are always vendors at the race expos selling their tutu wares. They can be expensive but are beautifully made and well worth the price. 5) Local Stores: Claire’s often sells tutus, especially near holiday seasons. Party City has a vast array of colorful tutus year-round. Some Six Flags sell Batgirl, Supergirl, and Wonder Woman tutus that are “super” cute! So don’t tut-tut, tutus! Go out, and get your own. Running is a serious business, but your outfit doesn’t have to be! Myra “Meemee” Taylor is a proud member of the BGR-Los Angeles Chapter. Tutus make running races fun! The last thing I wanna do during a race I chose to run is to take myself too serious.

A friend of mine did a fundraiser called do it in a dress, and we chose to go on a run in one. Not quite a tutu, but close enough!
