Brooks' Transcend Changes the Way We Think (and Feel) About Running

August 03, 2014

Screenshot 2014-08-03 17.36.47Earlier this year, Brooks added its newest product to its running shoe family, the Transcend, challenging runners to "Rise Above the Run." I have to admit during the initial behind the scenes preview (one the perks of rolling with the BGR! crew), I was a little taken aback by the plushness of the shoe. For the past few years, the running industry has been ALL about the minimalist movement, Brooks included with its PureProject line. Were we suddenly shifting from a minimalistic way of running to adding tons of cushion, JUST as I was starting to embrace the idea of running barefoot?!?!?!?!? Let the confusion ensue. But perception wasn't reality. At all. The Transcend, if you will, was actually giving people like me, the best of both worlds. While not COMPLETELY sold on a minimalist shoe, the Transcend was and is a hybrid between a minimalist shoe and something with more cushion. Turns out, you CAN have the best of both worlds. The Pitch: "Explore plush new worlds and leave behind the traditional laws of comfort with the all-new Brooks Transcend. On a mission to maximize the Float experience, every element of this shoe was innovated using biomechanical insights. From the Ideal Pressure Zones that disperse impact to the Guide Rails that provide on-demand support, not to mention the plush comfort of Super DNA cushioning, the Transcend’s thoughtful design will blow your mind. Head reassembly not included." (by Brooks) Specs:
  • Shoe Category: Support
  • Pronation: Moderate
  • Construction Type: Stroebel
  • Platform: Linear Platform
  • Surface: Road/Track
  • Arch: Flat, Medium
  • Body Build: Medium, Large
  • Water-Resistent: No
  • Waterproof: No
  • Launch Date: February 1, 2014
  • Weight: 10.1 oz
The Verdict:

Let me start by saying that my pair of Transcend's came in a space ship. No lie. (SIDEBAR: Now, I've worked in marketing and PR all of my career and I have to say hands down, Brooks does a stellar job when it comes to marketing and really speaking the runner in all of us! Not just athletes, but real people who do it for the love the pavement.) Now forget marketing, let's talk about the shoe.....

Imagine Brooks PureProject line had a baby with the Ravenna or Ghost. That's one beautiful baby right?!?!?!?! That's what you'll get with the Transcend! It's definitely a shoe I would wear when I'm not training, but rather one that I would wear when I just want to go out for a fun run. No pressure, no keeping track of pace, just running. I think this shoe is definitely for that person that wants to flirt with a minimal shoe, but doesn't want to go all in and commit. Have you tried to the Transcend? Let us know what YOU think!
