Nike Ditches Wearable Devices. What’s a Girl Supposed To Do?

April 22, 2014

131220_NIKEFUELBAND_T0U4219_largeWell, last week, my fitness tracker world came crashing down as word hit the streets that Nike is giving up on wearable tracking devices and will stop making the Nike+ FuelBand. According to CNET, "There's increasing competition in the market for wrist-worn fitness trackers, and Nike's digital app ecosystem, Nike+, has grown less reliant on wearables as smartphone sensors have improved. In other words, it makes less and less sense for Nike to stay in the hardware race when its physical wearables are not bottom-line needle movers, especially as companies like Apple and Google prepare to join the fray."  There's no word on how and/or if this will affect the Nike+ GPS Watch Powered by TomTom or the Nike+ Online community. But it sounds like you might have more options as Nike is releasing the API so that it can be integrated into other applications such as Run Keeper, Map My Run, etc But it's not all gloom and doom. Here's a few things to look forward to - More companies, like Apple and Google will enter the wearable device game. That can only mean more cool features! - You can expect more opportunities to track your workouts, etc. with your phone. If you only like having one device to worry about, this is GREAT for you - For all you Apple iPhone users (Booooo), look for more iOS apps from Nike, like Nike Training Club and Nike+ Move. Androiders....we'll just have to wait. *le sigh* Nike_Fuel_Lab_black_large - Nike DOES seem to be putting more eggs into it's Nike Fuel Lab, that was recently launched earlier this month. Again, we can expect more digital awesomeness from Nike, just not anything you can wear.
