Happy "Big Chop" Anniversary to Me

January 15, 2014

It's hard to believe that 3 years ago today, I took the plunge and cut off all of my hair. While my natural hair journey has been a very cathartic experience, it's also been filled with ups and downs, and has made me really evaluate how something as simple as hair plays a role in our daily interactions with our friends, family, strangers and business relationships, as well as our health. Most lessons have been tough to swallow, but it has forced me to open my eyes to just how challenging it can be to go against the grain in a world that quickly wants to put you in a box and insists that you look a certain way and that the way you look is an automatic reflection of your background, education and worthiness of the respect that anyone deserves. Would I do it all over again? I think so. Do I still think I'm often judged by my mostly unruly curls. Absolutely. Do I think this will ever change? Probably not in my lifetime. The only thing to do is to continue to challenge the social norms, so hair doesn't ever have to be a topic of discussion or cause for worry for my daughter.
