Fast (but, healthier) Food at Home

October 16, 2012

By: Demitria Lyles McDonald's, Burger King, Wendy's, Zaxbys, and Chik-Fil-A are just to name a few of America's favorite fast food restaurants they serve the most common meal: sandwich and fries. We know it's not healthy but there's just something those signs we see from the freeway that call our name. Well what if it was possible to get that same fast food feel at home? Thanks to the Food Network, you can get the same, if not better remedy for the fast food bug! Try making baked sweet potato fries here's what you need: 1.Olive Oil, for tossing 2. 5 sweet potatoes, peeled and    sliced into 1/4-inch long slices, then 1/4-wide inch strips, using a crinkle cut knife 3. Oil 4. 1 tablespoon House Seasoning (recipe follows) 5. 1/2 teaspoon paprika Here's the procedure: 1. Preheat oven to 450 degrees F. 2. Line a sheet tray with parchment. 3.  In a large bowl toss sweet potatoes with just enough oil to coat. 4. Sprinkle with House Seasoning and paprika. 5. Spread sweet potatoes in single layer on prepared baking sheet, being sure not to overcrowd. 6. Bake until sweet potatoes are tender and golden brown, turning occasionally, about 20 minutes. Let cool 5 to 10 minutes before serving. How about a burger to go with those fries? Here's what you'll need: 1. 1 1/2 pounds 90-percent lean, freshly ground turkey (not all white meat), chilled 2. Salt and freshly ground black pepper 3. 8 (or however many burgers you're preparing)  slices of your favorite cheese, sliced 1/2-inch thick 4. 4 sesame seed hamburger buns, split and lightly grilled And the procedure goes like this: 1. Preheat the grill to high. Form the meat into four 6-ounce burgers. If you are not going to cook right away, keep the burgers cold in the refrigerator. 2.  Sprinkle the burgers on both sides with salt and pepper. 3. Grill until cooked through, 3 to 4 minutes on each side or until it is cooked to your liking. During the last minutes of cooking, add 2 slices of cheese to each burger, cover the grill and let the cheese soften slightly, about 1 minute. 4. Put the burgers on the buns and dress them with your faves. Let these recipes serve as healthy alternatives for those fast food restaurants! You’re seeing exactly how it’s made and there’s no mystery meat. But, above all, its still about PORTION CONTROL.
