Support The American Diabetes Association and the Stop Diabetes® movement

November 23, 2010

We are all aware of the prevalence of diabetes in the African American community. I have even blogged about my family history of diabetes, and preventing the disease is one of the factors that motivates me to run. Therefore, BGR! is happy to support Verizon and the American Diabetes Association in their “Stop Diabetes” movement. Throughout this month, the American Diabetes Association and Verizon have teamed up to help raise awareness about the disease and to encourage, inspire, and empower people to live a healthier life. They are also sponsoring the Helping You Live A Better Life Sweepstakes. The grand prize includes: A $100,000 donation made in your honor to the American Diabetes Association and an all-inclusive trip for two to Canyon Ranch. Visit www.betterlifesweeps.com for event information and to enter the sweepstakes. The deadline is December 1st. Also check out these Android apps that are sponsored by Verizon and the American Diabetes Association. 1. Calorie Counter by FatSecret Calorie Counter is the essential app to simply find nutritional info for the food you eat and to keep track of your meals, exercise and weight.

The Calorie Counter application has all the cool tools to help you succeed: • A food quick pick to find calorie and full nutrition information or scan barcodes for nutritional labels • A food diary to plan and keep track of what you’re eating. • An activity diary to record all the calories you burn. • A weight chart. • A journal to record your progress.

2. Healthy Recipes by Spark Recipes The Healthy Recipes application lets you browse or search 2,000 of SparkPeople’s best recipes. You can then save them to your favorites, and all of the recipes include calorie and nutritional information. 3. CardioTrainer and the Weight Loss Trainer CardioTrainer is a free application that let's you record all of your exercise activity. You can track all of your workouts using GPS and a pedometer and then see a map of where you went and review stats like time, distance, pace and calories burned. You can also send your workouts to Facebook to share with friends and family. This is a great alternative for those of you who don’t have Nike plus.

The Weight Loss Trainer is a premium module that integrates with CardioTrainer to help you set up and follow a weight loss plan without counting calories. The application uses the simple principle that you can lose weight by eating less and exercising more. All you have to do is set up a workout schedule and then weigh yourself every few days to find out if you are on track. Weight Loss Trainer will tell you how many fewer calories to eat everyday, and combined with the calories you burn through exercising with CardioTrainer, the application will guide you through a personalized weight loss program to meet your goal.
