In January 2008, I was diagnosed with Lupus Nephritis after going to the doctor to investigate my aching joints. At that point, I was running religiously on a college track team, working out at least five times per week. I had been running track/cross country for almost ten years, and I had dreamt of competing at a collegiate level. Never before had I been faced with any health adversities, not even the flu, and this new diagnosis was one that was incredibly hard to swallow. I tried to continue running not only because I loved to run but because I loved my team; however, the following year I regretfully parted from them and fell into a period of inactivity. It’s hard to bring yourself to exercise consistently when you don’t feel your best.
I not only had to deal with Lupus, but also with Acute Kidney Disease. And once that was determined, it was hard to lift my spirits enough to even go for a light jog. I avoided track meets and other running events simply because I was envious of those who hadn’t suffered a major setback that kept them from the activity they loved. And even though I was totally capable of running, instead I chose to do nothing and just bask in my own sorrows.

I’ve always been in love with the idea of commuting to work by bike. Nothing screams urban, hip and cool like zipping around the city on a bike. Having just recently moved literally five minutes from my job, I’m finally able to do just that. I’ve got my bike (two to be exact), but I can’t just jump on and go. I must be properly outfitted! That’s why when I came across Lululemon’s “Ride On” collection I felt like I had died and gone to heaven. Any time I can meld my passion for fashion, with my love of health and fitness, it’s a win, win. Here’s a few of my favorite items from the collection.

This slim fitted blazer keeps you warm and has reflective detail. Plus there’s no need to shed the jacket once you get to work, rock it through the day if you work in a casual environment, or on casual Friday. Now that’s what I call fashionable and functional.

If you know anything about me, you know I’m a huge fan of Brooks. I’ve tried other brands and they just never seemed to stand up to my beloved Brooks Ghosts. Trying new shoes is scary. No one wants to drop $100 on shoes for them to ultimately fail the test. But when the folks at Mizuno insisted I try their new Wave Rider 15, I was up for the challenge. While Ashley consistently raved about the awesomeness of Mizuno, I was still apprehensive.

I love sleep. No, really I do. Ever since I was a kid, I’ve been a serial napper. As a child, my mom said I used to voluntarily take naps unlike all the other two year-olds in the world. In high school, I snoozed through Spanish (and still passed, by the way). In college, I planned classes around a 1pm siesta. To this day, I’m the worst passenger ever. If I’m in a car for longer than 10 minutes, I find a way to sneak in a nap. I’m not a morning person. In fact, if you want me to remember anything, tell me after 11 a.m. Race mornings are hard. Ashley accuses me of being cranky. I blame my nerves. But the truth is, I absolutely hate waking up early. I HATE IT.
