I would say that one of the primary reasons black women don’t run is because we don’t want to sweat out our hair. Ashley recently told me about one of her male friends who applauded Black Girls Run! for reassuring black women that it is okay to get their hair sweaty for the sake of working out and running. I’m not sure at what point black women became convinced that our hair must be perfect at all times, but while in the process of dispelling myths, we might as well dispel this one too.
To co-wash use the following steps:1. Shampoo your hair as you normally would
2. Apply conditioner to your hair. I recommend using Queen Helene mixed with 100% protein. You can find both at your local beauty supply or Sally’s. Apply the mixture to damp hair and cover with a plastic cap. Sit with the conditioner on your hair for approximately 15 minutes. If possible, sit under a dryer.
3. Rinse hair thoroughly.
4. Comb out hair using a paddle brush.
5. Once you have combed through your hair, apply either Matrix Curl Life or Redken Fresh Curls according to the instructions on the packaging.
6. Either blow dry your hair with a diffuser or let it air try. Try not to apply too much heat because it will make your hair frizzy.
7. Instead of shampooing your hair after each run, simply rinse and condition and style hair using the technique above.

There’s a couple of things to keep in mind about co-washing. You won’t nail it the first time you try it. Each person has a different grade and/or texture of hair. What might work for me, might not work for you. It truly is trial and error, but don’t give up. Also, it’s best not to use oil when styling your hair with the Redken or Matrix products. The oil will make your curls limp. Also, be sure to sleep with a satin scarf on your hair which will help prevent breakage.

I can unfortunately admit that before going natural/while wearing a relaxer, I hated to sweat and wouldn't dare workout, although I terribly needed to. :-/
Co-washing is my thang these days.
Do the curl products work on relaxed hair? I will have to give these products and co-washing a try. In the past, I have washed/ rinsed my hair daily or every other day to deal with the buckets of sweat that are released when running. My stylist and I argue constantly, but I just can't stop running for the sake of vanity!!!
Do you ever listen to the Michael Baisden Show? One of his recent topics was do black women use their hair as an excuse to not work out. It's sad but a lot of women agreed.
Saundra,
Toni and I both have relaxed hair. Co-washing has really worked well for her, and I'm still trying to perfect it. I think it's about finding the right products. But, I like the idea of washing out the sweat after running and not having to use heat to create a cute style.
Christie,
I haven't listened to Michael Baisden in a while, but I agree that most black women don't workout because they want to maintain their hairstyle. I think that black women have to stop putting their hair before their health.
So glad you wrote this! "Ahhh." I'm not a istance runner, but I love sprint intervals and plyometics. Not ideal for maintaining my sexy. hehehe.
We want women to realize that being sexy is SOOOO much more than having cute hair 24/7! I wouldn't trade my hair for anything and with that, I know that I might not have the "fresh from the shop" look if I plan on maintaining my health.
It's funny because I see plenty of women with nails done, hair/weave tight, make up hooked up...but when it comes to fitness, the ball is dropped BIG TIME. It's like it's okay to let your health take a backseat if you make an effort to keep everything else together.
I'm going to have to try this! Training for my first 1/2 marathon next May and I have to admit that when I have a big appt. at work, sometimes I skip my run due to concerns about my hair.
BTW, just found the site via Acting White! LOVE IT!!!!
Thanks Charlotte! Good luck on you half!
I just tried co-washing for the first time today. I didn't get the look I really wanted, but I'm going to keep trying. I have very coarse hair. What other products would you recommend? Also, can you overcondition your hair so that the curls are limpy?
Just stumbled on your site! Love it! I'm have struggled with my hair and stylists assuring me that my hair would never grow unless I gave up running. Sorry, my health is more important than my hair I would always tell them. My hair is growing fine now that I've discovered braid outs and twists. I usually do a co-wash, use a good moisturizing Shea butter, and braid out my hair in 2-3 french braids. In the morning I have pretty waves or curls depending on how small I make the braids.
Hi Autumn,
I just started experimenting with twist outs. Toni's co-washes look amazing, but I have not perfected the style. Twist outs work best, and they usually last for a couple of days.
This is a great idea and I will definitely try it with my daughter who is a swimmer and wears her natural hair in twists. I'm also a jogger (too old to run lol) and I will also try this for myself.
